British Film Industry

BBC  REPORT:

A report on the BBC website has said that the British Film Industry should back up more mainstream films. David Cameron has further been able to back up this theory. The Prime Minister has praised the UK film industry but has said that "we should aim even higher". The review is set to find out how the industry can offer better support for UK films. It has even been said thet the British film industry has made a £4bn contribution into the UK economy. Some have suggested that a variety of projects should be funded to create a "vibrant industry". Grassroots support gained success with taking in £3m at the box office as well as winning festivals and having DVD releases. There was no public funding in this project.

CHANNEL 4:

David Cameron has visited Pinewood studios in preparation for a government film policy issued next week. It's thought that the National Lottery will fund films in order to regain balance and support mainstream films. Julian Fellowes has stated that the lack of funding in these films before is because people believed they could get funding from elsewhere.

Last year, £34 million was invested in British film from the National Lottery. This year the funding will be increased to £43 million. The Kings Speech bought in £266 000 000 worldwire; making it a great success. It is said, however that the new funding schemes could prevent new talent from arising.

 PLAYLIST:

The Prime Minister  announced they were shutting down the UK Film Council, the organization that, were responsible for the allocation of funding for development and production. Those responsibilites now belong to the British Film Institute. David Cameron has said British Films shouldn't keep having to rely on Hollywood for back up. Ken Loach a filmmaker has said this report is reccommending that, rather than returning money to the central body after a film has made it back, it'll be kept by the production companies, who can reinvest in future productions. This will be able to make a more sustainable film industry. Filmmaker J. Blakeson has stated: "If UK public film financing starts taking fewer risks, it will get harder than ever for a first time director to get a film made, and it is already nearly impossible." It will also mean that some production companies will struggle to get finance. The Kings Speech was also turned down by most of the British Companies, yet is was widely successful. Working Title have become the most successful UK British Production company, however, they are owned by a US parent company...

The Hunger Games

The Hunger Games

Production:

During the production process of the Hunger Games, CGI (computer generated imagery) has been used to create a variety of different settings and animals througout the film. By using CGI it increases the cinema experience as audience's are intrigued by the use of imagination and a world of unrealism. CGI has become increasingly prominant in the film industry, this digital imagey is also used in films such as: Twilight Saga, Avatar and Shrek. However, this technology is very expensive and is time consuming.

HD (high definition) is used in the majority of films nowadays as it enhances cinema and home experiences, due to the high quality of the picture. By using this, it makes audience's want to go and see films as the motion pictures are in such fine detail. Again this can be expensive for companies to use.

Green screens are commonly used in a lot of films, they are often used to change or add a setting into the background. Actors/actresses act in front of the screen and a background is added later. Green screens are relatively cheap to use and can be used over and over.

Distribution:

  • The budget for this film was $78 000 000; which is roughly around £51 000 000.
  • The film was distibuted by Lionsgate
  • It made roughly $691 000 000 at the box office; £453 000 000 (approx)
The film issued a teaser trailer which is released before the official trailer. This keeps the audience gripped and waiting for the next trailer. It also creates the anticipation for the film release, as well as enabling the audience to comment on the trailer. By commenting on the trailer, it lets the audience feel apart of the franchise and therefore, they can actively socialise with other fans.

Two or three official trailers may be released after the teaser. The official trailer is also longer than the teaser; this one lasts for around 2.5 minutes. By distributing a gripping trailer is makes the audience want to go and see the film, which results in a bigger profit at the box office.

A variety of press interviews take place which feature the stars of the film. This lets the audience feel connected with the actors and they like to here their thoughts and feedback. It also increases the promotion of the film.

The official website is still active due to 3 other films being released from the adaption of the 2 novels. The webitse also enables the audience to take an active part whilst the movie is being released.

2.

The films are entitled to a budget of at least £30 000 000 due to the success of the business. The production is marketable to a wide audience due to the genres differentiating. Tim Bevan said that usually two movies will be produced with opposite genres; therefore, making the films mainstream. There is an international market as the company has a relationship with universal who is the parent company. The development department also has a wing in the US and the UK. This means that the films can have a higher budget and have a global distribution which means there is an increase in the international market. This is also reinforced by using a variety of different actors with different nationalities: Hugh Jackman is Australian, Hugh Grant is British as well as Helena Bonham Carter and Renee Zellweger is American. In order to keep the flow - one film will be produced as the other is being released and it cannot be dependant upon one film.
